JULY 16th 2001 MEETING FEATURES

  • X-otic Hardware #3: HAM Radio/Computer Interfacing, by
Steven Humlicek is re-doing his presentation on HAM Radio/DSP stuff. Here's what he's doing:
"Hams are using the sound card in a PC (which cost a couple bucks) as a DSP. Hams have written freeware software to decipher audio and convert it into text messages and vice versa, like a modem, But doing it with 31 baud. Yes this is slow but there are other modes like SlowScan TV (PICS). And anyhow how fast can someone type? I hope I didn't bore you last month."

  • X-otic Software HOW-TO: Setting Up Dynamic DNS with DHCP at Home, by Matt (the college guy ;)
This is important for those of you using a cable modem or xDSL at home, behind a firewall or personal router. You're probably running a DHCP server and your client home PCs get their IPs from there. But how do you run your own DNS in this configuration? Come and find out. Matt should have HOW-TO info as well as his own insights on setting it all up. [Matt also provided info on HOWTO set up your own home network]

  • Free Schtuff!
Tom has some extra Linux Journal magazine giveaways this month for those who are interested.

  • P I Z Z A - N - C O K E !
If there is enough interest, Free Pizza and coke. But please show up before 7:30 if you plan on having pizza! ;)

  • Other local user groups are ALWAYS more than welcome to attend our meetings...
    No Charges or Dues...
    ever...

    The "XCSSA Files"

  • From requests from the March 2001 meeting, a review of Norton Ghost and Partition Magic. Good technical info!
  • Our February 2001 meeting's RAID-101 Slide presentation, in its native Star Office .sdd format and (for you Windowz folks) in MS Power point .ppt format. Let me know if the .ppt file is garbled.
  • Check out our own "Firewall & Broadband Research List". MUCH useful info.
  • Also, the popular "October-2000" DNS/Traceroute notes taken down by Daniel.
  • The XCSSA Archives: We have so much good stuff demo'd at our group, we've decided to start archiving the montly group pages. Check'em out! This is what we have from 2000-05 on and should give you a good idea about the type of stuff that we do on a regular basis...
  • Hardware Trouble Shooting Tools from the June 18th Meeting. Lists out specifics on what tools to use to t-shoot hardware problems from RAM, to CPU, to hard drive--and also lists a couple of great emergency recovery boot tools to fix hard drives, partitions, etc.!

    -RECRUITERS LOOK HERE-

Our user group's members are not your
normal run of the mill geeks. We pride our-
selves in having a wide array of technical and IT
professionals who excel in their fields. I have found
that I can bring most any question to the group and get an
insightful answer, and thus, have begun point recruiters to our
members as a service to both. Feel free to contact the members below
for job history and resume information. They're a powerfully diverse resource!
