Hacked I-Opener Running Linux
The I-Opener is a home internet appliance that was designed by I-Opener. It's basically a 10"LCD, 180MHz, x86 computer that's been hardwired to give people dialup Internet service through the I-Opener parent company. The idea was that you buy their box for $99, and then subscribe to their ISP service for x-years. The cost of the hardware was offset by the assumed ISP subscription.
However, hardware hackers quickly discovered what was inside these units, and how to modify them to run whatever OS they want! The cool part is, for $99 you could go out, but one of these, mod it, and have a cool LCD mini computer to use for whatever you want. Check out this FAQ for info on hacking these units to have them do your bidding.
Some people use them as MP3 players, a kitchen web browser, a "Bathroom Research Node", etc... :) Come and see Nick Borko's tweaked out I-Opener running Debian Linux in all it's glory!
