Hey folks,
First the general question:
Does anyone know a good way to detect intrusions in a [normally]
unoccupied attic? There is a person-sized hole in my attic wall that
I share with a neighbor, and there is a flimsy trapdoor that leads
down into the living areas. I don't think PIR sensors will work due
to the high ambient temperature.
Personally, I would use a double-barrel 12guage loaded with 00buck
mounted facing the opening with a tripwire six inches up from the bottom
of the opening tied to the triggers. But I'm kinda a no-nonsense guy
when it comes to the security of my home...
There are a number of webcams out there that detect movement and start
taking pictures when they detect movement. But, I've never heard of a
IR webcam.
An alternative might be some of the X10 home automation stuff. They
make plenty of different controllers for the distant end and even have
some IR home security sensors that can report movement.
There is also a tiny little controller you can stick on a serial port of
a computer. It can control any X10 module you want to have switched and
it can even receive signals from modules for recording on the computer.
I'm sure you could set it so when sensor X triggers and reports to the
computer -- it starts up Webcam Y and records pictures. That sounds
like it would be an easy one. Check out the X10 stuff on the web.
