That sounds a lot like the Atari 400, which had a membrane keyboard.
Maybe they were worried about people spilling their drinks on it :-)

My first computer was the Atari 800.  I wanted an Apple, but it was
expensive for a toy that my parents didn't know would turn into an
obsession and a career and an industry.  I didn't have the luck of
having a computer-savvy mentor, but my parents did eventually
recognize that I was really into the computer thing.

You had to buy games in cartridge form, at least until I got one that
would let me run off disk.  Now we've come full circle, with most
video gamers playing on game consoles that make it [fairly?] difficult
to copy games.  I'm sure there are hacks to deal with this "problem"
("feature") now, too.
