Oh yeah, in case anyone is wondering, that program is used in my
backup system, and I've just begun re-writing parts of that, so maybe
I'll get around to polishing it up enough for public consumption soon.

It will involve:
1) A replacement for dd (enough is enough, the interface is cryptic
and was a practical joke) that I will promote heavily to the free
*nixes. The replacement is called "block", because it is designed for
dealing with block devices (such as tapes). It will support spanning
volumes, perhaps in as flexible a way as tar's --new-volume-script.
2) A tool for estimating file system size (potentially after
compression using bzip2, eventually via a configurable filter)
3) A bin-packing program like mine but with multiple options
(heuristics and brute force)
4) Encryption options, including one that supports IEEE P1619, should
they ever publish a standard for tapes.
5) Configurable support for tar, dump, cpio, direct images, etc.

Possibly:
Remote backup via ssh or other remote piping mechanisms.
Interoperability with amanda

Any ideas or discussion is welcome.
