Thanks for asking John... My apologies folks... I've dropped the ball this
month. But my excuse is the same that has kept me out of work, in bed for
the past 4 days + a trip to the ER. Food poisoning. Wow.. I had no idea how
bad THAT little bugger could be (see
http://www.accepta.com/Industry_Water_Treatment/Campylobacter.asp).
Anyway.. I'm just now recovering... and yes.. the meeting is ON.. but I was
simply negligent in my duties.

I can talk a little on that. But would like to make it more of a "Best
Practices Comparisons", allowing several experienced folks to talk on what
we've found works best when doing upgrades and migrations. I have a general
web zine article that I wrote from a few years back on doing web server
migrations that can be generalized... and my own /home drive strategy is a
personal favorite. But some of you old timers.... I would love to get your
$0.02 and hear your war stories and current best practices... Maybe limit
20-30min per person?
Topic #2:
I would also like to similarly open the floor to the discussion of
"Windows/Linux Desktop App Equivalency". A type of X on Windows = Y on Linux
overview that I plan on using in my Open Source talk at the July Open Source
fest. A few obvious examples might be:
Windows App Linux App
-------------------------
MS Office Open Office (duhh), SiagOffice, KOffice
MS Word Abi-Word, KWord, etc
IE Firefox, Konqueror, Opera
Outlook Evolution, KMail, ...
Visio Dia, Kivio
Photoshop GIMP
WinAmp XMMS, Mplayer
WinDVD/WMplayer XINE, MPlayer, Totem
Notepad Kedit, Gedit
UltraEdit32 Gvim
... ...
I would love to open this up to group discussion this month and grow out this
list a bit.. :) But remmember.. think common "must have apps" in Windows =
what in Linux? As the target audience of this baby presentation is going to
be people who want to make the jump from Windows to Linux, but need to see
the existing, stable desktop on which they will be landing... and being
assured that everything will "be ok". :) Over the next month I'll include
this info in my "State of the Linux Desktop" talk at the Open Source Fest in
July.
BTW.. More info on the Open Source Fest (where this talk is eventually going
to end up) is here:
http://cis.sac.accd.edu/~skolars/satlug/index.html
It will be at Kelly USA from July 12 - 15. Those interested in volunteering
as staff to assist with the event.. please contact myself and Steve Kolars
(the head dude).
So.. I guess it's a little late to send out a meeting announcement... Maybe
the above was good enough...? Hope it wasn't too little too late...
I guess we'll know if we see you there.. :)
