I do the same thing, except I save the $5 a month fee by registering my free URL through www.dyn.dns.org using one of their extensions. My router updates the IP address automatically. You can chose to do it yourself if you wish. I use it to remotely access my files with login and passwords. You can even set it up as a web server.

> I have a setup just like you described. Here's how I do it. I set up a
> simple host account with GoDaddy for $5 a month. On the web page I
> uploaded to that account - http://coitnet.net

- there are a couple of
> links which redirect to my IP address at the house.
>
> At the house, there is an old 75Mhz compaq which holds 3 old hard drives
> containing all the data to be share.

>
> With Time Warner Road Runner service you can't get a static IP address
> however the "dynamic" IP address they gave hasn't changed in a couple of
> years, so the html front page on the GoDaddy website has a simple script

> redirecting from the GoDaddy host server to my cable modem at the house.
> (If TW decides to give me a different IP address, I only need to edit the
> html script on the GoDaddy server and I'll be back in business.)

>
> Behind the cable modem here at the house is a cisco linksys router (W54G?)
> which is set up so that any calls to port 80 (http calls) get routed to
> the old Compaq. The config to the router has a page to direct to any

> specific unit's address on your internal network (for example,
> 192.168.0.500 or whatever you have set up).
>
> The Compaq has a real simple username:password login to screen out
> whomever isn't a defined user on that 'puter.

>
> I know that this isn't as secure as it might be but I think for my
> purposes it's adequate. At least I haven't been intruded upon yet. In
> any event, you have the option to 'harden' your server as much as you

> want. Also, as you can see, you don't need much power to simply serve up a
> few hundred family photos, MP3's and other miscellany.
>
> My cost for all this is $5 a month to GoDaddy, $15 for the Compaq, $0 for

> the old hard drives I had mouldering away in a closet, $0 for the router I
> got in the startup package for my Vonage phone (woo-hoo) and a bit of
> nagging from the spousal unit about keeping the Compaq running 24/7 behind

> the living room couch.
>
> Hope this helps. Dan Coit
>
> xcssa-admin@xcssa.org wrote:
>> Hey guys & gales,
>>
>> I need an external HD box that my family can access via web browser
