Flickr's not really free if you want to use it like it's intended to use.
Cost is a meager $25/year and you can upload 2GB per month. Free accounts
can only upload 2MB/mo and see the last 200 photos uploaded (although none
are deleted, just not browsable until you pay). Flickr has a simple
permissions system which allows you to flag photos as Private, Friends,
Family, and Public. Private is just that, only you can see the photo.
Friends and Family are seperate flags on contacts and only contacts with th=
e
right flags set can see those photos. This allows you to post pics that
your friends can see but family can't. As a rule, most of the pictures of
my kids are set to friends and family.
You can also add tags, descriptions, and have people comment on your
photos. I've now got almost 7,000 pictures on Flickr and find the tags and
search features necessary. These make it a lot easier to share a few
pictures with people.
I spent the weekend camping with my parents at the Texas Kayak Builders
Bash. One of the organizers performed a trick where he stands in his kayak
and balances his paddle on his head. Instead of emailing those pictures to
the dozen people who asked for them I can just send a link:
http://flickr.com/photos/antonolsen/search/text:kurt+standing/
Your contacts can also subscribe to an RSS feed of your photos. This make
it a lot easier for my family to keep track of new photos. It's gotten so
we don't even bother to send links and just say "check Flickr" when we're
chatting on IM.
If you're worried about the reliability of Flickr I have a handy bash scrip=
t
that will efficiently create a mirror of your flickr account on your own
computer (and keep it up to date). One of these days I'll clean it up and
post it on my blog (http://anton.lr2.com/), let me know if anyone is
interested and I'll accelerate posting it.
