I've never bricked one, and I've flashed a few.  Just verify your firmware rev 
with the proper binary and you should be ok.

If you do brick one.. de-bricking instructions are easy to find.

p.s. I really like ddwrt... especially if you're managing more than one unit 
(with rflow http://dd-wrt.gruftie.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php?link=rflow). 
Although OpenWRT is nice if you're building your own custom WRT firmware or 
application AP/router.
