Hey all..
Here's some more information from my ad-hoc virtualization talk last night on
current virtualization technologies:
More Info on x86 Virtualization:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization
Info on "paravirtualization" and "Ring 0/-1" concepts discussed last night:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paravirtualization
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_0
Exhaustive Virtualization Technology Comparison:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines
Current AMD Proc Listings:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Turion_microprocessors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opteron
Current Intel VT Proc Listing:
http://www.intel.com/distributed/modules/sitelets/viiv_spec.htm
Here are some corrections from last night:
-Most Intel Procs out now (below) DO include the VT code..
"Pentium 4 6x2, Pentium D 9x0, Xeon 3xxx/5xxx/7xxx, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo
processors" more info here
-I said that AMD's VT technology was NOT on the ML or MK flavors of the Turion
proc, but only on the TL line. This was incorrect (see List_of_AMD... link
above). The ML and MT Turions do not feature Pacifica/VT, while the MK, TL
(and newer) do. So check these out when looking for a good PC for
virtualization.
Oh.. and here's the laptop (Averatec 2370) that I demo'd and was talking about
last night that is both VT capable and very low cost:

(also at Sams Club stores for $880)
There's also a "Black Friday" special on this unit at OfficeMax for $599 (if
you get there early):

Happy Thanksgiving All,
Tweeks
