[XCSSA] UPS question

I had my APC Back-UPS Pro 1100 for about 5 years.
Not a bad run.
The other night my batteries started to cook.
Bulging and Leaking were involved.

Question:
Had my batteries just gotten old or has my charger failed and
just cooked them to death?
