That had occurred to me, but there is no error checking on that.  Plus it 
can be huge.  The items I mentioned (PartImage and SelfImage) are actually GPL.

Could you not use parted to grow the partition?  There is also a utility in 
nfstools that does this (I'm pretty sure that's how most distros shrink NTFS 
partitions to make room for linux).
