Have you recently tried to open a "Microsoft Open" formatted document? (.docx as it's called).  
I have.. You can't do it... BY LAW in Linux/OOffice!

Senate Bill 446 [1] and House Bill 1794 [2] would require Texas state
agencies to use ODF for electronic state documents.  The ODF Alliance,
which includes Red Hat, IBM, Sun, Oracle and Novell, supports the
adoption of ODF by Texas.  However, Microsoft is lobbying against the
legislation.

The committees in the House and Senate will debate the ODF bills next
week, so please contact your Texas State Senator and your Texas State
Representative [3] and let them know you are a Texas IT professional and
you support ODF.

Supposed "competitors" are all rallied around this issue.  Please help
to make choice and freedom from proprietary format lock-in the law of
our land.
