If you stick to generating power renewably, you are protected by law
and good PR. If you work through the local grid's net metering
program, you are cool. The utility provides these programs either
because they are required by law, or it would look really bad if they
didn't. They would rather not do it, but have to.
The second you generate power non-renewably, they are going to shut
you down. You have no legal right for that, and they would not be
inclined to grant one. Then, if you could get past local ordinances,
you would need to become a licensed and regulated electricity
provider, and if you had enough electricity to sell, you could get
contracted for it. Probably not worth the trouble until you get
reliable megawatts.
