Some video editing can be done with the (in)famous CD and DVD buring
program suite called Nero. Costs around $70.

It works, sometimes. Much like Windows itself. Actually, I found I
was able to do what I need with Nero and not with the basic DVD
software standard on Mac OS X. However, as the Mac program
cheerfully informs me, I can upgrade to the Pro version for about $70
and then it would do what I need it to, maybe.

Be careful that you don't delete any of the built-in Windows
programs, codecs, etc., because there's no telling how many of them
Nero depends on. I made the mistake of deleting one Windows program
that was always hanging my Windows system on shutdown, and it was
months before I got Nero working again.

Nero is also available for linux.

Rocky as it is, Nero is vastly preferable to any of the innumerable
video shareware programs out there (quite a racket) that always have
one or more broken or missing features that you only discover upon
registering and paying for them. Even after you pay, you may
discover that these programs are filled with spyware and other trojan
horses that isn't easy to get rid of even after you have uninstalled
the program. And by the time you put all the necessary pieces
together, which is easy to underestimate, you may well find that
you've spent as much as or even much more than what a commercial
program would cost. You would think that shareware programs would be
cheap, and they are, but only in one sense of the word.

Video is too complex and touchy a domain to leave to crooked
shareware authors (who sometimes get the guts of the program from
open sources, if you are lucky). There are a gazillion ways video
can get messed up, and does, even by commerical programs. And just
because a DVD works on one player, don't assume it works on any
others. I found shareware programs that wrote DVD's that would cause
DVD players to hang so badly they needed to be powered down to get
the disc out, which I was relieved to be able to do (and thankful I
had never activated the "auto-play" feature).

Nero may or may not be better than the Roxio programs. I used to
have lots of fun discovering and tolerating malfunctions in programs
by Roxio's predecessor Adaptec.

About a couple months after I bought Nero 7, they cheerfully informed
me I had the opportunity to upgrade to Nero 8 for another $70.

Like many other commercial software vendors, Nero has a QA staff that
pays them to use the program. Fortunately, there's a new update
every month or so, which probably won't help. Or at least there is
while your version is current.

Within Nero's bloatware package of programs, I find there's only one
program that I actually use. It's called NeroVision.

Frustration with programs like Nero makes one pine for more
professional programs like Premier, but only until one sees the price
tag. Then one begins to think of enrolling in classes just to get
the student discount.
